Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) and Three Mountain Alliance (TMA), located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park near Volcano, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,220/Mon.
DUTIES:
Carries out field work to support field operations, conducts surveys, and develops and improves monitoring and data gathering methods. Provides data management, GIS (Geographic Information System), and field support for the Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) Program Manager and TMA staff relating to all aspects of natural resource monitoring and management in the TMA management area. Supports TMA projects by assisting with field work, including forest restoration. Gathers data while in the field and conducts field data quality assessments. Inputs, organizes, and manages TMA tabular and spatial data including weed control efforts, fence line status, ungulate control activities, reforestation projects, outplant monitoring data, and bird surveys. Maintains, updates, and helps develop TMA geo-database. Inputs and manages TMA GPS (Global Positioning System) data. Designs and prepares data summaries, reports and maps. Works closely with TMA member agencies to coordinate data sharing. Prepares quarterly TMA updates. Participates in and drives to field site visits and assists TMA Program Manager with planning and conducting TMA Quarterly Meetings. Assists with purchasing for project. Organizes and maintains project photo database and assists with other projects as needed.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with coursework in Biology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field. (Associates Degree from an accredited community college and at least two (2) years of professional experience in natural resources management may substitute for a Bachelors Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of field experience surveying plant and animal populations in remote areas of Hawaii, or similar. Experience must be well-documented. One to three (1-3) years of experience organizing data and databases for natural resource management projects or related field. Experience in basic data analysis and spatial data analysis. Experience in report writing and preparation. Coursework/training in data/GIS related programs/applications or experience with GIS, ArcGIS or related software.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Knowledge of database management principles and software such as Microsoft Office Excel and Access. Knowledge of basic principles of biology and natural resource management. Knowledge of how to use and download handheld GPS units. Knowledgeable with ArcGIS software.
ABILITIES and SKILLS
Ability to locate natural resources and navigate using compass, map, and Global Positioning System (GPS) hand-held units. Ability to apply herbicides. Ability to work independently. Must be highly organized, detail oriented and must be proficient in use of personal computer (PC) computer applications (e.g., MS Access, MS Excel, etc.) and ArcGIS software. Ability to read topographic and other map formats and use Global Positioning Systems. Ability to perform data collection, data entry, management and basic statistical analysis. Demonstrated commitment to data quality and accuracy. Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to comprehend complexverbal and written instructions. Ability to write reports and other documents in intelligent, clear, and concise language. Must be able to work closely with field staff to streamline data collection process. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
