What You Will Do

Come join the best and brightest minds in the world at one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions engaged in strategic science on behalf of U.S national security. The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world.

Postdoctoral Position in Separations Science and Engineering: the Materials Synthesis and Integrated Devices Group (MPA-11) is seeking outstanding postdoctoral candidates to join a multi-disciplinary team with on-going research efforts in fundamental and applied separations science and engineering. Our projects range from developing novel chemical systems for improved separations and novel contactors for efficient separations, to flowsheet testing and evaluation and scale-up testing. Active areas of research include CO2 capture, critical materials separations (including rare earth elements), heavy metal waste treatment, radioisotope purification, and actinide separations. We also utilize a broad variety of separations techniques including absorption, solvent extraction, ion exchange, chromatography, precipitation/crystallization, and electrochemical separations (e.g., electrophoresis or electrorefining). Research opportunities include developing the underlying science to understand and improve these techniques, modeling the chemical and transport phenomena in separations processes, designing/building/testing separations equipment, scale-up testing, and process modeling, simulation and optimization. Candidates are expected to publish the results of their research in the open literature and present their work at relevant conferences.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance*

Excellent publication record in the field of required expertise

Experimental or modeling experience with one or more of the separations techniques mentioned above such as absorption, solvent extraction, ion exchange, chromatography, precipitation/crystallization, and electrochemical separations (e.g., electrophoresis or electrorefining)

Demonstrated record of working safely in chemical laboratories (for experimentalists)

Expert command of spoken and written English

Good communication skills

Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment

Strong motivation and ability to work independently

Ability to plan and organize assignments and meet project deadlines

Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Education: A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed is required.

Desired Qualifications:

Candidates who can demonstrate a strong background in one or more of the following areas are invited to apply:

Experience in the area of CO2 capture, particularly from flue gas or directly from air, or acid gas treating

Experience in the area of rare earth or other critical materials separations

Experience in the area of actinide separations or radioisotope purification

Experience in the area of water desalination or wastewater purification

Experience with electrochemical techniques such as voltammetry, amperometry, impedance spectroscopy, electrorefining, etc.

Proficiency with characterization of solid-state compounds or solutions using techniques such as FT-IR, Raman, UV-vis-NIR, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and/or electrochemical techniques.

Experience with fabrication and/or testing of microfluidic devices

Experience with the synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids or metal-organic frameworks

Experience with the handling, synthesis and characterization of compounds containing actinides and/or transuranic elements, radioisotopes, or other hazardous materials

Proficiency with radioanalytical techniques such as alpha spectroscopy, gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting

Experience in process modeling and simulation with AspenPlus or other process simulation software
