Job Description:

The Research Scientist in the Center for Children’s Environmental Health at the School of Public Health is responsible for the designing and conducting epidemiological studies to identify the health effects and determinants of environmental exposures in vulnerable populations. The incumbent will devise, formulate, and execute protocols for both observational and interventional studies, conduct statistical analysis, and disseminate their insights through peer-reviewed publications and presentations. They will also work as co-lead for joint research undertakings.

The Center for Children’s Environmental Health has an active research portfolio conducted research related to chemical exposures, climate change, air pollution, water pollutants, and molecular biomarkers. Members of the Center conduct observational, community-based, and interventional studies across North America. The Center is dedicated to promoting the health of children by understanding the determinants, health effects, and biological action of environmental pollutant exposures from before conception until adolescence. Our Center is engaged in studies examining air pollutants, pesticides, drinking water contaminants, metals, and chemicals used in consumer products. Our Center’s interdisciplinary group of faculty, postdocs, clinicians, students, staff, and practitioners conduct research, teaching, and community engagement in Rhode Island and around the world.

With this Research Scientist position, we seek candidates with advanced skills in data management, epidemiological study design, and biostatistical analysis to support faculty-directed grants and contracts. In particular, individuals with research skills and experience involving high dimensional biomarkers, environmental chemical exposures, intervention studies, and exposure assessment are preferred. Additionally, we desire candidates with experience working with a variety of data types and sources (e.g., public records, biomarkers, geospatial data, etc.). Candidates should be able to work in an interdisciplinary and collaborative team of lab scientists, biostatisticians, clinicians, and community stakeholders.

Education and Experience:

Post-Doctoral Degree in Epidemiology or related field and 5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in environmental health related topics.

Job Competencies:

Understanding of and ability to implement advanced biostatistical methods

Ability to critically evaluate studies of children’s environmental health, exposure assessment methods (e.g., biomarkers of exposure, -omics technologies), and early life origins of health.

Assist in developing or implementing novel studies designed to study the effect of environmental exposures on human health or interventions to reduce exposure.

Ability to disseminate novel scientific studies (e.g., results presentation, manuscript prep).

Detailed understanding of epidemiological principals, particularly life course and environmental epidemiology.

Ability to adapt knowledge base and skill set to new study designs, exposures, or health outcomes.

Understand concepts relevant to the collection, quantification, analysis, and interpretation of environmental chemical levels in biospecimens and environmental samples, with the long-term goal of being able to apply them in future studies.

Expertise in at least one (1) statistical programming language (i.e., R, Python, Stata, SAS, or similar).

Strong communication skills, in both written and verbal formats, and including under short deadlines.

Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse range of partnerships

Excellent technical skills

Superb record keeping

Understanding of scientific and administrative processes for scientific manuscript and grant preparation, development, submission, and review.

Additional physical demands and working conditions: remote/hybrid eligible.
