The Advanced Research in Cyber Systems Group (A-4) of the Analytics, Intelligence, and Technology (A) Division is seeking post master level students looking for a challenging paid internship for the current academic year and/or summer. All selected candidates will be provided with a mentor, a challenging project for their appointment, and an opportunity to present their project work and progress to colleagues. The student projects we have to offer will vary depending on the skills and interests of the candidate and our current needs.

A-4 conducts research and development in four primary areas. AI assurance, anticipating risks posed by new machine learning innovations and developing guardrails to make complex AI systems trustworthy and reliable for national security applications. Provably secure systems, conducting hardware and software research and development to provide the highest levels of assurance that systems operate within given parameters and are not susceptible to particular attacks or vulnerabilities. Critical system design and analysis, creating systems and software for “no-fail” national security missions, designing and analyzing Operational Technology (OT) hardware and software for Los Alamos internal systems, and conducting security analyses of IT and OT systems for other government agencies and organizations. Cybersecurity workforce development and training, conducting cyber security incident response training for US federal government, state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, government contractors, US critical infrastructure, and international partner’s government and critical infrastructure

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Recent graduates (MS Degree) would qualify for a 2-year appointment through our Post Master’s program. All viable candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 for consideration and have earned the degree no more than 3 years ago.

A resume and current transcript, showing GPA and course work requirements, are required.

We are seeking a wide variety of computational skills. To receive full consideration, candidates must typically be pursuing a degree in one of the following fields:

Computer and Information Sciences

Computer Engineering

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Electrical Engineering

Systems Administration

Computer Networking

Computer Systems Analysis

Software Engineering

Information Systems Security Management

Mathematics or Physics

Applied Mathematics

Statistics

AND, have knowledge and/or introductory experience in one or more of the following areas:

Artificial intelligence/machine learning

Computer forensics

Network analysis

Reverse engineering

Cryptography

Formal methods

Statistics/mathematics

Industrial Control Systems (ICS)

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)

Cyber-physical systems

Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGAs)

Software development

Hardware programming

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2- Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
