Post Doctoral Position IVIS Facility

Geology and Environmental Sciences – Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh – (25000184)

Image Visualization and Infrared Spectroscopy (IVIS) Facility: The IVIS Facility is managed by Prof. Michael Ramsey and housed within the Department of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh. The facility is comprised of three labs designed to function as integrated state-of-the-art image analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and a Global Positioning System (GPS) center. It contains a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with the capability to collect concurrent reflectance and emissions spectra of rocks and soils up to a temperature of 1600 K. All image processing and data storage are managed by a Linux server and over 300 terabytes (TB) of online disk storage. Workstations, archival data, and an array of field-based equipment (including multiple thermal and multispectral cameras) are also available for the research position.

Position Details: The position is funded for twelve months with extensions possibly dependent on external funding. Work will be focused in two primary areas, both centered on thermal infrared (TIR) data analysis. The first area involves assistance with algorithm coding, development, testing, and evaluation for the planned NASA Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission. These algorithms range for thermal anomaly detection to surface mineral composition, to volcanic activity. The secondary focus is on data collection and calibration of the PI’s new MMT-gasCam instrument, which entails both laboratory and field deployment, data reduction and analysis, and calibration improvements. For both, the hire is expected to work with other scientists on both projects, assist in the laboratory and with student mentorship, as well as lead-author scientific papers.

The position includes a strong benefits package of health/dental/vision coverage as well as optional access to other university benefits. Some remote work options may be possible. The start date is March 15, 2025.

Required:

Ph.D. in one of the following fields: geology, volcanology, or remote sensing.

Experience with remote sensing analysis, TIR data for Earth/volcano applications, and computer programming.

Preferred:

Experience with imaging optics, TIR data, camera design, and calibration.

Experience with remote sensing and geospatial data analysis.

Experience working with field campaigns at active volcanoes.

Experience in working with large datasets and computer programming (e.g., IDL, Python, R, and/or Google Earth Engine).

Commitment to open data and code practices.

To apply: Please apply through Talent Center and email Prof. Michael Ramsey at mramsey@pitt.edu with the email subject “TIR Data/Volcanology Postdoc Opportunity” and the following combined as 1 pdf attachment:

A cover letter describing your career goals, experience, and interest in the position.
