The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for two open rank, tenure-eligible or tenured positions in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering ( https://engineering.virginia.edu/department/systems-and-information-engineering ). The primary responsibilities for both of these positions include research, teaching, and service to the department, university, and professional community. The appointment rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Position 1-Systems Engineering Open Domain: Candidates are expected to contribute to a methodological area, such as, but not limited to: operations research, modeling and simulation, optimization and decision analysis, automation and control, data analytics and machine learning, systems thinking, human factors, and/or and human technology interaction . Ideal candidates should have a broad perspective on systems engineering theory and methodology, and be interested in collaborative research activities that complement those of our faculty. Our faculty work on engineering complex systems that span domains including healthcare, commerce, transportation, defense, among others.
Position 2-Systems Engineering Precision Health Initiative: This position is distinct from Position 1 in terms of domain focus. In particular, this position will focus upon interactions with the recently formed Precision Health Initiative (PHI) which supports transdisciplinary research and training to optimize health outcomes for individuals and entire populations. SEAS is making multiple faculty recruitments in this area, and recruits associated with this initiative will receive support from the Provost and from their school and will have strong participation in the PHI. (https://research.virginia.edu/grand-challenges-precision-medicinehealth/precision-health-initiative-phi).
As appropriate, in the cover letter, note your interest in applying to one or the other position, or both.
Candidates will be expected to engage in funded research and to develop an externally funded research program. Duties include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and service to the department, university, and professional organizations. Candidates must possess a demonstrated record of academic scholarship, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank, and demonstrated teaching excellence. Candidates from non-traditional academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply including veterans, industry professionals, or governmental laboratory researchers/scientists.
Both positions are based in Charlottesville at our principal location. UVA is a highly selective undergraduate and graduate institution that annually ranks as one of the premiere public universities in the United States, with one of the highest graduation rates in the nation. UVA is situated in Charlottesville, Virginia, a picturesque and vibrant small city consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top places to reside. UVA’s location offers proximity to Washington D.C., enriching opportunities for collaboration and engagement with numerous federal organizations. More information about the city, the school, faculty benefits and other topics can be found at https://hr.virginia.edu/careers-uva/why-uva .
Candidates must have received a doctorate or equivalent in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, or a related discipline by the start of their appointment. Evidence of a commitment to high-impact scholarship, funded research, undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching and advising excellence, professional and university service, and mentoring are expected.
Candidates who aim to tackle complex, systems-oriented research problems will benefit from the cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research opportunities at UVA. In particular, many departmental faculty are active members of the Link Lab ( http://linklab.virginia.edu ), UVA’s world-class center of excellence in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with faculty from across the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Many also particulate in pan-university institutes, e.g., Brain Institute ( https://braininstitute.virginia.edu ), Environmental Institute (https://environment.virginia.edu/), and School of Data Science ( https://datascience.virginia.edu ), bringing engineering perspectives to these broader initiatives across UVA.
In conjunction with these positions, senior graduate students are eligible and encouraged to consider the UVA Engineering Rising Scholars program. This program is designed to encourage early-career scholars to pursue a career in academia by supporting their postdoctoral work before beginning in a tenure-track position at the University of Virginia. Detailed information and application instructions are available at https://engineering.virginia.edu/rising-scholars-postdoctoral-program.
