Materials Engineer – BWX Technologies, Inc. – Euclid, OH

Provide technical leadership and utilize a strong background in Materials Science for broad metallurgical support in a project team environment, for both internal and supplier manufacturing. The ability to lead technical projects/investigations, manage extensive documentation and the possession of excellent time management skills are crucial. Familiarity with materials processing (melting, forging, heat treating, casting), mechanical testing, ferromagnetic material properties, metallography/SEM, EDM, plating, corrosion, and nuclear engineering materials is strongly desired. Experience in industrial heat treating is preferred for this position.

Responsibilities:

Utilize a strong Materials Science background to manage/oversee and improve internal and external material processing and evaluations of a variety of Iron, Nickel, Cobalt and Copper based alloys and their components.

Interpret and implement military and commercial material and processing specification requirements.

Interpret and implement product drawings and customer technical document requirements.

Prepare/review supplier technical requirement documents.

Review supplier procedures to ensure proper material/component processing.

Review material certifications for product acceptance.

Review/assist creation of internal special processing and test routings and coordinate testing of materials and processes.

Review metallographic specimens and reports for weld and braze qualifications.

Compose procedures for heat treatment, solvent cleaning, acid cleaning, etc.

Interface with customers and a variety of internal departments. Maintain close relationships with material, and other suppliers.

Lead qualification efforts of new EDM and laser etching applications, plating suppliers. Assist in supplier development.

Implement and maintain Cleanliness and Detrimental Materials Control (MIL-STD-767, MIL-STD-2041).

Take the lead in resolving internal and supplier materials-related technical and quality issues. Compose technical reports and/or corrective actions.

Evaluate and resolve foreign material, cleanliness, corrosion, plating surface, thermal processing and material property issues utilizing internal metallurgical lab (metallography, SEM, hardness, R&D furnace) and external lab resources as needed. Includes shop floor evaluation of parts.

Provide Supplier support through on-site visits and source inspection of selected parts and operations, including heat-treat surveillance. Suppliers include heat-treaters, mills, foundries, forges, and platers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s, Masters or PhD of Engineering in Materials Science or Metallurgy.

Minimum five (5) years of experience in a metals-related industry. Relevant post-graduate work or co-op employment with a metals focus may be considered as experience.

Strong verbal and technical writing skills.

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

The base salary range for this position in [[stateProvince]] at the start of employment is expected to be between $[[cust salaryMin]] and $[[cust salaryMax]] per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed ‘at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
