Standards and Storage Administration Processes
Devise agency storage management and business resilience standards for systems, subsystems, SMS constructs, volume serial numbers, hardware, network components, backups, data replication groups, backup schedules, snapshots, electronic vaulting, etc.
Create or enhance storage management and business resilience processes and technical procedures.
Utilize the agency Service Now to manage incidents and changes.
Space Management
Design, build/re-engineer, test, deploy, and document both Storage Management System (SMS) and non-SMS system storage space for each sysplex.
Implement, test, and document SMS data class, management class, storage group, storage class, and Automatic Class Selection (ACS) updates based upon change requests. Solicit approvals from customer pool managers for the change. Utilize the IBM TSO and ISMF technologies to modify the SMS constructs and ACS code. Test the changes before activation into the production environment. Document all updates and interact with the customer submitting the change request to ensure actions meet their needs.
Consult the BMC Mainview Storage Resource Manager and EMC Unisphere infrastructure to perform storage monitoring, analysis, and management.
Establish and document processes to configure/manage media meta-data, SMS pools/constructs, thin provisioning pools, data replication containers, unused space reclamation, etc.
Customer Support
Aid customers based on assigned Service Now tickets, email inquiries, and phone calls received on the following subjects:
Storage provisioning, backup, and recovery needs,
z/OS DASD and tape volume requirements,
Access methods,
Use of IBM’s Job Control Language (JCL), IBM’s dataset utilities, IBM’s Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF), and IBM’s Access Method Services (IDCAMS) tools to manage datasets,
Primary and secondary allocations for both basic and extended-format data sets,
Dataset retention based upon the management class policies established in SMS,
Catalog services for submitted change requests using the IBM IDCAMS and Dino Software TREX tools.
Storage Infrastructure and Process Design and Implementation
Analyze the operating posture of the existing storage hardware and software. Plan, design, test, and deploy enhancements, new infrastructure, and technical processes to meet expanding workloads, exploit new technologies, improve operational functionality and efficiency, and protect the integrity and resilience of the agency’s data. Specific tasks include:
Commission and decommission storage subsystems, as required.
Construct data replication topologies to move data between storage subsystems, data centers, and the e-vault.
Install/enhance/configure software and construct backup and recovery processes to protect data from accidental or deliberate corruption or erasure.
Design virtualized provisioning pools/processes and automated tiering policies.
Design SMS pools, constructs, ACS code, HSM parameter library members, etc.
Upgrade and configure storage hardware and software such as DASD and tape subsystems, command/control servers and software, storage communication gateways, storage resource management and performance management software, mainframe storage started tasks, and backup/recovery software.
Design automation scripts to report/alert, analyze, and manage storage.
Design storage performance processes that report/alert on issues. Build processes and utilize models that plan for future capacity and performance needs.
Design, construct, test storage infrastructure, and migrate data to new z/OS Logical Partitions (LPARS) and sysplexes.
Assist with the development of new storage architectures, including long-term transformational plans.
Design, implement, test, and deploy physical and virtual tape storage infrastructure and processes, including onboard intelligence for encryption, data-deduplication, compression, etc.
