Primary Purpose

Do you love the outdoors, care about wildlife conservation, and enjoy traversing across the forest? We are seeking students to be involved in a project that is quantifying the status of road systems and user-made trails throughout the Deschutes National Forest to better inform ways to reduce the impacts of road and trail-induced fragmentation on wildlife.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inventory the status of administratively closed roads on the Forest and to map out user-made road and trails systems not accounted for in the forest road and trail network.

Locate and record data on the status of known roads in Arc Field Maps, as well as recording tracks for unknown roads and trails.

The work will be done by vehicle, bicycle, and on foot and data collected through the Field Maps phone app.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

Ability to communicate effectively with others, in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Forest Resources Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis.

Ability to work with Forestry Program Director, faculty, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.

Ability to travel to locations to collect data.

Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Ergonomic Requirements

This person will travel by vehicle, bicycle, and/or on foot to various locations in order to collect data.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Current COCC student.

Experience:

One year related education or work experience in Forestry or Natural Resources.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

Interest in geospatial mapping in natural resources.

Basic knowledge and use of ArcGIS platforms.
