Job Description

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsiblities

MSTS is seeking an experienced Electro-Mechanical Technologist (Sr. Technologist) to support engineers, scientists, and senior technicians with the installation, operation, and maintenance of pulsed power machines, neutron and high-energy x-ray generating devices, to interrogate explosively driven physics packages on subcritical experiments (SCEs) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) facility.

Install, operate, and maintain pulsed power machines, neutron and high-energy x-ray generating devices, to interrogate explosively driven physics packages on subcritical experiments (SCEs) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) facility.

Collaborate with multiple internal and external organizations to field and characterize the Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) machine in Area 11 in preparation for installation and operation at the PULSE facility.

Work as part of a team of engineers, physicists, and technologists from the weapons labs and the NNSS to install and operate Z-pinch Experiment Underground System (ZEUS) and possibly Scorpius, along with associated pulsed power diagnostics systems and detector systems on SCEs at the PULSE facility.

Frequent travel to the NNSS forward areas is required (approximately 30 miles beyond the Mercury gate)

Some travel to New Mexico and California to support weapons laboratories may be required.

Experience in the use of basic and powered hand tools, must have a working knowledge of a variety of laboratory instrumentation such as digitizing storage, DVMs, and oscilloscopes.

Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 5 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 7 years’ progressive related experience.

Experience with electrical components, circuitry, the building up and hand wiring of circuit boards, soldering, AC/DC electronics, basic hand tools, electronic test and measurement equipment, and basic electronic troubleshooting.

Ability to work underground is required.

Ability to work well with others, as they will regularly interface with team members, other teams and outside organizations.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience with planning/organizing skills and initiative, and be capable of employing independent judgment and knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed efficiently and on time.

Ability to effectively deal with pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks.

Experience working in a team environment that includes scientist, engineers, technicians, and designers.

Ability to work under minimal supervision in a dynamic multidisciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.

Experience using standard office software products.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and work as part of a team.

Ability to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.

Must be competent in basic electronic work and optical work including Fiber optics.

The primary work location will be in the forward areas at the Nevada National Security Site (forward areas are approximately 90 miles from North Las Vegas) with some work occasionally performed at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The PULSE facility is located in the forward areas of the NNSS.

Limited travel is required.

Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).

Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 (http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=14b1c770db022992d237769fbe9fc519&mc=true&node=se10.4.707 14&rgn=div8) , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Hourly range for this position is: $33.78 to $50.67.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
