We are currently seeking a Deputy Division Leader for our Chemistry Division Office; in this role the Deputy Division Leader will be a partner in providing strategic direction and management oversight for the Chemistry Division (C Division). This division has highly successful and enduring collaborations with academia, industry and other national laboratories and is home to world-class capabilities in synthesis, diagnostics, detection, analysis and characterization, and spectroscopy. Chemistry partners with other divisions in interdisciplinary activities including nanoscience, non-traditional chemical and material processing, isotope production, and nuclear science as well as atomic, molecular and optical spectroscopies. C Division is an intellectually and programmatically strong and diverse organization with over 330 full time employees and a budget in excess of $200M, fulfilling core roles across the LANL mission space of nuclear deterrence and stockpile stewardship, protecting against the nuclear threat, and energy security, while providing fundamental research and technical solutions for the emerging missions of the Laboratory.

Reporting to the Division Leader, the successful Deputy Division Leader candidate will have direct responsibility for significant elements of the technical leadership of the Division and represent the Division and Directorate in institutional level science and program planning. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will have expert-level knowledge and proven experience, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

Experience managing in research facilities with chemical and/or radiological or nuclear hazards.

Management of research and development organizations, including the development and implementation of business and operational systems supporting science and programs.

Strong record of accomplishments in science or technical programs demonstrated by:

Documented publications, presentations and funding

Experience in developing technical capability and improving scientific infrastructure

Demonstrated creation and motivation of technical teams utilizing leadership in the physical sciences

Demonstrated ability to attract, mentor and reward scientific staff in successful technical efforts

Ability to lead the workforce in creating and sustaining an inclusive work environment that enables innovation and creativity through diverse thoughts and ideas.

Demonstrated success in supporting internal and external collaborations to develop complex programs; representing the programs internally and externally to sponsors and/or review boards.

Experience in implementing, enforcing and providing guidance for Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice and/or procedure.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of science or engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

PhD preferred

Desired Qualifications:

PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering.

Knowledge of the C-Division technical and research portfolio and an understanding of how the portfolio supports LANL’s missions.

Experience interacting with internal program offices and external funding agencies (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, etc.) while effective managing personal conflict, negotiating agreements and partnerships.

Capabilities in implementing, enforcing and providing guidance for Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice and/or procedure

Line management, supervision and development of assigned employees for an organization of a moderate scale for a team larger than 30 people.

Ability to delegate authority and build consensus through effective communication with subordinates, peers and superiors.

Ability to work within teams supporting organizational or institutional goals.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, October 31st. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
