What You Will Do

Seeking a strong and self-motivated Accelerator Vacuum Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 3 or 4) to be a member of the LANSCE Vacuum Systems Team within the Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) Group. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of vacuum system components like scroll pumps, roots pumps, turbomolecular pumps, cryogenic pumps, and ion pumps. The successful candidate will also be responsible for vacuum instrumentation like pressure gauges.

The candidate will provide demonstrated experience working on accelerator vacuum systems, including finding and repairing leaks; identifying, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts; planning and preparing for work in the future; following instructions closely and calling supervisor when unsure about something; working closely with team members and personnel from outside the team or group; staying highly productive while prioritizing safety of self and others.

This position can expect rotating on-call duties where one must be available 24 hours per day for a week, every other week during accelerator beam production. Call-ins can be at any time of the night. Occasional overtime will be required for urgently needed work.

This position will be filled at the Accelerator Vacuum Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 3 or 4) level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($63,200-$99,000)

The candidate will provide demonstrated experience working on accelerator vacuum systems, including finding and repairing leaks; identifying, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts; planning and preparing for work in the future; following instructions closely and calling supervisor when unsure about something; working closely with team members and personnel from outside the team or group; staying highly productive while prioritizing safety of self and others.

Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($69,500-$110,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level a candidate selected at the higher level would be doing:

A candidate will be hired at the higher level if demonstrating mastery level and extensive experience working on accelerator vacuum systems, including finding and repairing leaks; identifying, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts; planning and preparing for work in the future. Demonstrated ability and experience leading vacuum system maintenance and repair activities and less experienced technicians.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineered Systems Tec 3:

Maintenance of all vacuum components, including vacuum pumps, vacuum instrumentation, and associated electronic controllers; vacuum instrumentation like ion gauges and Pirani gauges (or similar).

Applied knowledge of vacuum technology and principles of vacuum practice for particle accelerators or other large facility.

Demonstrated skills in developing, building, operating, maintaining, leak-checking and troubleshooting vacuum systems

Demonstrated strong work ethic with ability to work independently and as part of a team under both general and/or specific instruction.

Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Demonstrated knowledge of and a commitment to doing work safely and securely.

Be capable and willing to work in radiation areas while adhering to ALARA principles.

Demonstrated basic computer skills for email & web browsing (for entering in digital time sheet)

Maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity and stubborn repairs.

Education/Experience Level 3: Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Engineered Systems Tec 4

Advanced proficiency and demonstrated skills in developing, building, operating, maintaining, leak-checking and troubleshooting vacuum systems

Advanced applied knowledge of vacuum technology and principles of vacuum practice for particle accelerators or other large facility.

Demonstrated mastery of all aspects of vacuum technology and experience with leading operations and mentoring other technicians.

Education/Experience Level 4: Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

Design, fabrication, commissioning, and maintenance of vacuum components (pumps, instrumentation, tubes, and flanges)

Experience in rebuilding one or more of the following: scroll pumps, roots pumps, turbomolecular pumps, cryogenic pumps, and ion pumps

Experience with use of standard machine shop equipment and hand tools

Certified crane and/or forklift operator.

Experience in the fabrication of simple mechanical parts working from sketches, formal drawings, or oral instructions.

Certification in welding and/or brazing

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Vision, Speech, and Hearing; reading vision, walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, crawling, twisting the trunk or back, balancing, applying torque with hands or arms, lifting 50 pounds, use of hand tools like wrenches and pliers, use of small power tools like drills and impact drivers.

Work Environment: In confined space, working overtime or irregular schedule, being on-call, working off-shift/rotating schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work under unusual lighting conditions, work in noisy environments, work in radiation areas, occasional work in the middle of the night, work in hot environments, work near strong magnetic fields, work near electrical power supplies, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, work while wearing hood respirator/PAPR, hard hat, safety glasses or eye protection, mask or respirator, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: *Q * (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
