What You Will Do

The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Physical Sciences (ALDPS) Undergraduate Student (UGS) Internship Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines that includes engineering, physics, materials science, chemistry, robotics, computer science, business and more. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student’s area of study.

Examples of projects in ALDPS include, but are not limited to:

Charged particle acceleration through controlled utilization of electromagnetic fields;

Supporting National Security missions involving radiographic imaging, remote measurements of electromagnetic signatures, sources of directed energy (for probes and defeat), and development of new capabilities such as radiation therapy and irradiation/sterilization of materials;

Discovering materials and exploring their properties and developing new characterization tools and practical applications of materials;

Deliver core materials science, technology, and hardware essential to ensure weapons materials performance;

Analysis of data acquired using the ChemCam instrument currently deployed on the NASA Curiosity rover;

Modeling neutron scattering and yield within systems involving extreme temperature and pressure conditions;

Design, execute, and analyze experiments that challenge, improve, and validate our understanding of fundamental physics;

Manufacturing science related to nuclear weapons, nuclear fuels, ferrous alloys, refractory metals, and a variety of non-metallic materials;

Managing the budget, staffing, timeline of construction improvement at research sites.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in any Physical Science, Engineering or Business related discipline. Examples include: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering.

Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering college freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an undergraduate degree program.

Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

Student selected for UGS internships in ALDPS are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety;

Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional and/or scientific context;

Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting;

Advanced knowledge utilizing various computer systems and software; and

Innovative thinker who can find unique solutions to complex issues that may arise.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
