What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division is seeking an Engineered Systems Tec level 3 or 4 for the Instrumentation and Controls Group – Controls Hardware Team. The successful candidate will work on the AOT-IC Hardware team, which is primarily responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and supporting hardware systems for the control and data acquisition of the accelerator at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center.

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 3 or Engineered Systems Tec 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Engineered Systems Tec 3 $63,200 – $99,000

This position involves working in a team environment to learn from fellow technicians and technologists. An EST 3 in this position will be required to participate in maintenance and upgrades of current systems as well as installation of future instrumentation and control systems. On any given workday the successful candidate’s activities will vary between troubleshooting and maintaining existing systems, fabricating/assembling/deploying new systems, soldering, assembling cables, wiring chassis and modifying field wiring.

Engineered Systems Tec 4 $69,500 – $110,300

In addition to the level 3 work scope, at this level, a candidate will be self-motivated to complete assigned tasks. A successful candidate will be able to collaborate with personnel within the team and group to develop technical solutions. This position will require an extensive knowledge of electrical components and systems as well as knowledge in generating reports and system documentation that will lead to the ability to spearhead project upgrades.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineered Systems Tec 3:

Working knowledge and experience wiring cables, systems, and enclosures with accuracy and attention to detail, using good cable management and crimp/termination techniques.

Working knowledge and experience using electronic test equipment (i.e. oscilloscope, DVM, pulse generator, etc.) to troubleshoot and repair at a system level.

Working knowledge and experience developing and working from formal drawings/schematics.

Availability to work flexible and extended hours as needed including the willingness to support the facility 24/7 through on-call duties on a rotating basis.

Working knowledge and experience performing installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs on electrical equipment and/or systems.

Proficient using standard shop tools such as soldering irons, drills, saws, punches, etc.

Engineered Systems Tec 4:

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

Extensive knowledge in electrical systems, electronics, engineering standards, and control systems

Extensive skill in preparation and presentation of materials for technical reports, documents (including drawings and schematics), and presentations.

Extensive work experience to function independently and lead the planning, construction, installation, testing, and documenting of electrical equipment/systems.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position require an Associates’ Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience soldering and/or IPC J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies certification.

Demonstrated experience translating electronic design projects to drawings and system/circuit description documents.

Familiarity with a variety of sensors, including pressure, flow, current, voltage, strain, and temperature.

Experience using LabVIEW, Allen Bradley ControlLogix, or other documentation and/or controls related platforms.

Experience in installing and basic troubleshooting of computer networks.

Experience terminating and troubleshooting fiber optics communication links

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
