About the Position:

The work unit exists to provide educational instruction and training for nursing staff within the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo’s (CMHHIP) Nursing Education. Nursing Education is a professional environment where new, returning, and existing staff can grow and develop. Nursing Education encompasses activities that include Nursing Orientation, Nurse Residency Program, Behavioral Electronic Health Record (BEHR) training, Annual Nursing Competency Fair, Nursing Student Clearance and Placement, Nursing Onboarding Processes, and specific unit program education. Nursing Education develops, facilitates, and manages nursing implementation of policy, procedure, & theory-based curriculum to prepare nursing staff with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to safely provide high-quality mental health care across the care continuum at CMHHIP.

This position provides educational instruction and training for nursing staff at CMHHIP based on current standards of care, CMHHIP policy, and Nursing Department Procedures. The instruction/training provided includes but is not limited to Nursing Employee Orientation, Nursing Behavioral Electronic Health Record (BEHR), just-in-time (JIT) training, discipline-specific training as requested by the Nurse Executive Committee, preparing annual nursing competency modules for Cornerstone Learning Management System, and planning, leading, and supervising the Nursing Department’s Annual Nursing Competency Fair.

This position reports to the Nursing Education Manager.

Nursing Orientation Including Electronic Health Record Education & Instruction:

This position is responsible for instruction and training for Nursing Orientation.

Works to ensure that nursing education promotes the development of a competent, confident nursing workforce, healthy work environment, and a safe, reliable, patient-centric experience of care within the forensic, mental health practice setting.

Teaches, trains, coaches, mentors, and supports new nursing staff and existing staff in all aspects of nursing education to provide high-quality, psychiatric, forensic and medical nursing care.

Identifies any nursing staff that struggles with the learning material and provides 1:1 coaching and/or applies alternate learning modalities when realistic.

Stays current on CMHHIP Policy, Nursing Department Procedure, and the standard of care to recognize and report any needed changes/discrepancies in the training curriculum to the Nurse Education Manager.

Creates an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and open communication among the nurse education team.

Models effective behaviors as facilitator, mentor, and coach, and embodies CMHHIP mission, vision, and values to include attributes of a growth mindset.

Creates a working environment that promotes retention, positive employee engagement, adherence to company policies, effective communication, collaboration, innovation, optimal productivity, and continuous learning.

Promotes a team spirit and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching.

Provides in-the-moment coaching and gentle correction during training.

Reports any ongoing competency or conduct concerns to the Nurse Education Manager immediately and documents concerns appropriately.

Offer QAPI-Based Monthly Training/Refresher Classes for Nursing Staff:

Provides at least monthly educational refresher courses as per Nursing Department needs and Nursing Executive Committee requests.

Partners with the Nursing Operations Committee (NOC) to identify areas for improvement for Nursing Staff

Schedule, and communicate at least monthly training/refresher courses to address QAPI deficiencies. (Examples include: IPOC, S/R documentation, CSSR-S, Therapeutic Documentation, etc).

Ensures completed training rosters & curriculum are provided to Staff Education & Nursing Staff supervisors.

Competency Fair:

Act as a liaison between the Competency Fair location and the Nursing Department. The location for the Competency Fair is determined by space availability and suitability.

Partner with the Nurse Education Team to determine & map out the best-suited location for each competency station to enhance learning and minimize disruption to learning and other departments.

Work with facilities/operations and Central Sterile Supply to ensure tables, chairs, and other needed equipment are made available to facilitate learning and safety.

Collaborate with Nursing Program Assistants to create signage to ensure clear communication of stations, traffic flow, entrances, and exits.

Communicate with Nursing Program Assistants to ensure copies of Form 1052 for each discipline (Group A/B/C/D) are made available for each staff member.

Prepare and ensure scenario-based competencies are available via Computer Based Training (Cornerstone) for all disciplines at least two weeks prior to the start of the Annual Nursing Competency Fair.

Work with other departments (e.g., laboratory, pharmacy, cardiopulmonary, physical therapy) to ensure competency modules are prepared and provided to Staff Education for upload to Cornerstone within deadlines.

Act as a point-person during the Competency Fair to answer questions, troubleshoot problems and provide guidance.

Work with the Nurse Executive Committee and Nurse Education Team to communicate the competency fair expectations and station assignments.

Collaborate with Infection Control and Employee Health to offer immunizations at the Competency Fair.

Assign Nurse Managers, Assistant Directors of Nursing, Light Duty Nursing Staff, Clinic RNs, and Nursing Program Assistants duty stations with station expectations during the Annual Competency Fair.

Communicate at least monthly to the Nursing Operations Committee any upcoming plans, proposals, deadlines, and concerns with the upcoming Annual Competency Fair.

Prepare and review Group A/B/C/D 1052 content and cover sheets for adherence to the most current CMHHIP Policy and Nursing Procedures.

Propose changes in Group A/B/C/D competency to NOC with approval by NEC prior to Cornerstone competency modules being built.

Other Duties as Assigned:

Any additional duties that aren’t covered in the previous duty statements to meet the vision and mission of the agency and the department.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a valid, active Registered Nurse License issued by the State of Colorado (Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) OR any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the Minimum Qualifications and Required Skills outlined above, our ideal candidate will possess the following Preferred Qualifications:

BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Five (5) years total nursing experience, including 1 year psychiatric nursing experience

Six (6) months experience teaching nursing staff

Essential Attributes:

Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations

Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds on occasion

Conditions of Employment:

May work various shifts

Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare

2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire

This position will be paid biweekly

A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Successfully pass all modules of the CMHIP New Employee Orientation core curriculum to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics

Possess the physical ability to successfully complete CTI & CPR

Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist

Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled containment to the floor

Withstand impact on own body using an ASP shield

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for using a defensive tactic

Kneel on one or both knees and stand up again with multiple repetitions

Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety

Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury

Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently

Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations

Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing

Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings

Willing and able to travel.
