What You Will Do

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (MPA-CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking highly qualified candidates for a Post Bachelor student to join a multi-disciplinary team with on-going research efforts in advanced materials synthesis and characterization. A strong background in chemistry, materials science, or materials characterization is required. Experience with inorganic chemistry, nanoparticle synthesis, or electron microscopy is particularly desirable. Candidates will have the opportunity to publish the results of their research and the chance to present at conferences and technical meetings.

MPA-CINT is a multi-program organization in the Materials Physics and Applications Division with a broad portfolio of programs in support of discovery science and national security missions. One of the group’s greatest assets is its technical diversity which spans biosciences, chemistry, materials sciences, physics, and engineering.

The work location for this position will be the CINT Core Facility located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Demonstrated experience performing laboratory work in a research-oriented environment.

Acceptable communication skills (oral and written, and interpersonal).

Ability to work effectively as a part of a team or independently in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Ability to plan and organize work to meet project deadlines.

Education/Experience: Completion of Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or other closely related discipline completed within the last 3 years. Cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 is required.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with inorganic chemistry, nanoparticle synthesis, or electron microscopy.

Expertise with bench chemistry techniques, materials synthesis, and fume hood operation.

Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIR, and NMR).

Proven ability to work effectively both in a team environment as well as independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goals are viewed favorably.

Work Location: The work location for this position is offsite at the DOE NSRC CINT Core Facility in Albuquerque, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
