What You Will Do
The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies is seeking a US Citizen undergraduate intern to help support a Laboratory Directed Research and Development project on thin films for extreme environments. The selected candidate will learn PVD thin films synthesis, film metrology, and prepare manuscripts on the findings. This will all take place in the world-renowned Los Alamos National Laboratory.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interested in nuclear materials, nanomaterials, thin films, electron microscopy, and working in a laboratory setting. There is no better way to test out an R&D career in the DOE national laboratory sector and broaden your connections for your future. This position will take place from May through September with the possibility of a one- or two-month extension.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience working in a laboratory setting with special emphasis on conducting operations safely and with professionalism.
Experience with technical writing and presentation
Understanding of the scientific method and basic materials science topics
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with PVD sputtering, vacuum instrumentation, electron microscopy, and nanoindentation
Enrollment in a Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering program
Education and Experience:
Position requires enrollment in an undergraduate program in a STEM degree or a related field, with a GPA of 2.75 or above.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
